The Nigerian government has seized a private jet belonging to a former Minister of State, Dan Etete.
The jet, which is currently in Canada, was seized by the government after presenting a warrant to the jet’s owner, a company known as Titbit Ltd.
Etete served as a Minister of Petroleum under dictator Sani Abacha. During that tenure he was accused of running a corrupt oil deal.
Etete was alleged to have set up a company, Malabu Oil & Gas, under a false identity then awarded them the rights to a lucrative Nigerian oil block.
He purchased the private jet for $57m in 2011, the same year he sold the oil rights held by Malabu Oil & Gas to the Nigerian government for $1.1bn.
Etete, who has been convicted of money laundering in the past, is now in the crosshairs of the Buhari regime.
The government received a court order from a Canadian judge to seize the plane which they served to Titbit Ltd early Saturday, June 6th.
The company has until Tuesday to contest the warrant or the plane becomes government property.
