Honorable Haruna Iddrisu, minority leader of the NDC has given reasons why MPs deserve to be paid monthly salary of Ghc 21,000 and ex-gratia of Ghc 600,000.
In his words, parliamentarians do not have the security of tenure so they deserve to receive better emoluments.
The Tamale central MP maintained that MPs hold disposable positions unlike other government workers who can maintain their works for years and as such, they (MPs) must be treated well.
“It is important that the public appreciates that for our job, there is no security of tenure… At the end of four years, [an MP] has to be entitled to it [better emoluments]. “What we need to do is to carry the public along. There are many of you who comment as if MPs are not deserving of it [better amoluments],” he told the press on Tuesday.
All that is now being worked out. It is not just gratuity but salary arrears will be paid to deserving members of Parliament who have served their four-year term. I believe, and I stand by it that salaries of Members of Parliament equated to that of appeals court judges. That is my view, that is my notion and I think strongly that we will work towards that.”
There is news surfing that Parliamentarians are holding the government at ransom demanding an increment to their salaries and ex-gratia.
