A human rights lawyer, Joyce Opoku Boateng, has said that calls for the office of LGBT Ghanaians that was recently opened in Accra to be shut down are against the laws of the country.
Speaking on Starr Fm, Joyce said that gay people like all Ghanaians have the right of association and their office cannot be closed down legally.
She said the only way they can be arrested is if they’re caught in the act engaging in unnatural carnal knowledge, which is illegal – but just opening an office and having meetings isn’t illegal.

“I don’t think it will be right for anyone to invade their office and attack them because they have not met to engage in any s*xual activities. Every human being when you’re born has a fundamental right that no one can take away from you. But we have our norms and culture that frown upon certain things,” she said.
“If you are caught in the act of having unnatural carnal practice then that’s criminal but when someone expresses his/herself, that’s not criminal because the law is not against that. Assuming someone dresses like a female and you go and beat up the person, it’s a clear case of assault,” she added.
Her comments come after Ghanaians rose up in needless righteous anger recently after an office was opened in the country for LGBT Ghanaians.
The group LGBT+ Rights Ghana, held a launch to outdoor their new office. In attendance were representatives from the EU and the Australian high commissioner to Ghana.

That has sparked the legendary Ghanaian homophobia into high gear. Moses Foh-Amoaning, the top bigot in the country has called for the police to shut down the office even though that has no legal basis.
Being a so-called lawyer, Amoaning has once again allowed his hate to cloud his legal judgement. Thankfully, a human rights lawyer has set the record straight.
If we live in a free country as we purport, we just cannot arrest people for starting an association.
