President Of Haiti Assassinated In His home

Jovenel Moise, the president of Haiti, has been assassinated in his private residence in Port-au-Prince earlier today.

The interim Prime Minister Claude Joseph announced on Wednesday that the president of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, 53, was shot and killed in his private residence. 

An official statement was published by the president’s residence on Wednesday confirming that the attack occurred around 1 a.m. local time (5:00 am GMT) and that first lady Martine Moise was also wounded and is currently hospitalized.

According to reports from AFP news agency, the Prime minister revealed that the assassination was carried out by a commando group with “foreign elements”.

“The president was assassinated at his home by foreigners who spoke English and Spanish,” Prime Minister Joseph was said to have disclosed. He also labelled the assassination as a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act.”

“All measures are being taken to guarantee the continuity of the state and to protect the nation,” he added.

The Prime minister said police had been deployed to the National Palace as well as the upscale neighborhood of Petionville and will also be sent to other areas.

Before his death, Jovenel Moïse, 53, had been in power since February 2017, after his predecessor Michel Martelly stepped down.

His time as President was painted with accusations of corruption and waves of often violent anti-government protests from citizens demanding his resignation.
