Scarlett Johansson Sues Disney For Releasing ‘Black Widow’ Movie

Hollywood star, Scarlett Johansson is suing media giant Disney over breach of contract in the release of the latest Marvel movie “Black Widow”.

Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court against Disney alleging that her contract was breached by the media giant when they released the film on its Disney+ streaming service at the same time as its theatrical debut.

Part of the suit said, “Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel.”

The actress claims in the suit that Disney’s Marvel Entertainment agreed and guaranteed an exclusive theatrical release which was supposed to increase her salary through the box-office performance of the film.

According to Scarlett, her salary was based in large part on the box-office performance of the film and Disney releasing it on their streaming platform has robbed her off her money.

“To maximize these receipts, and thereby protect her financial interests, Ms. Johansson extracted a promise from Marvel that the release of the picture would be a ‘theatrical release,'” the suit claimed. “As Ms. Johansson, Disney, Marvel, and most everyone else in Hollywood knows, a ‘theatrical release’ is a release that is exclusive to movie theatres. Disney was well aware of this promise, but nonetheless directed Marvel to violate its pledge and instead release the picture on the Disney+ streaming service the very same day it was released in movie theatres.”

A spokesman at Disney reacted to the suit saying “there is no merit whatsoever to this filing” and that Ms. Johansson’s suit is “especially sad and distressing in its callous disregard for the horrific and prolonged global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
