Sammi Awuku Appointed As Director-General of the National Lottery Authority

National Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has been named the new Director General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA).

His appointment has been approved by the council of state in line with the law governing the appointment of the NLA head.

Sammi Awuku takes over the post from the acting Director-General, Mr Ernest Mote.

Mr Mote was serving in an acting role after his predecessor, Kofi Osei Ameyaw, left the role following the expiration of his contract in February.

At 37 years of age, the former NPP youth organiser becomes one of the youngest, if not the youngest ever person appointed to this prestigious post.

Sammi Awuku

Awuku made his name as the NPP’s Youth Organiser and has always been associated with his ability to help out the youth with his organisational talents.

Before this appointment, he served as board chairman of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), another government agency targeted at helping out the youth.

There is no question the skills and approach Awuku would bring to the NLA job would be unlike one any former Director General has even contemplated.

His strong attachment to youth causes could see the implementation of policies at the NLA aimed at benefiting the up and coming young people, who disproportionately take part in NLA games.

Awuku is also a product of the internet age and no doubt has numerous ideas on technological innovations to make the agency fulfil its mandate of ‘Development through games’.

On balance, this is an inspired and shrewd appointment from the President which should have positive ramifications on the running of the NLA and the aspirations of Ghanaian youth.

Profile

Sammi Awuku as earlier mentioned has served as both national youth organiser and national organiser of the NPP.

He is a product of St Augustine’s College.

Sammi Awuku holds numerous academic qualifications including a postgraduate certificate in public administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), a postgraduate certificate in advertising, marketing and public relations from the Ghana Institute of Journalism and a BA in political science and psychology from the University of Ghana, Legon.

He also holds a Master’s degree in international relations from the Freie Universität Berlin in Germany, a certificate in public leadership from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in the United States and a diploma of higher education in law from the University of London.

He has been elected three times to serve as vice-chairman of the International Young Democrat Union (IYDU), which is an organisation of the youth wings of all centre-right parties in the world.

He is also a proud alumnus of the American Council for Young Political Leaders (ACYPL), a global platform for identifying and nurturing talent among young future leaders.

Sammi Awuku was named as one of the top 50 rising African stars by the Paris-based Africa Report magazine in 2014.

In 2017, the All Africa Students’ Union (AASU) named him as “Continental Youth Icon” in honour of his well-documented efforts towards youth development on the continent.
