Samuel Takyi has lifted the spirit of the nation by securing a medal at the Tokyo Olympics after a long medal drought.

The 20-year-old boxer defeated Columbia’s 32-year-old David Ceiber in a quarter-final match to guarantee him at least a bronze medal. This is a stellar achievement as no Ghanaian boxer has had the shot at a medal since Prince Amartey won bronze in 1972.

The “Golden Ring Warrior” won by a 3-2 split decision after losing on all the judges’ scorecards in the first round. Not much was expected from the Olympics squad as Ghana hardly wins in the Olympics, but Samuel Takyi is giving the country a glimmer of hope as he inches gradually towards the coveted gold medal.

Ghana set up the National Olympic Committee in 1951, initially competing as the Gold Coast. Ironically the Gold Coast has as yet been unable to win any gold medals. Before the Tokyo Olympics Ghana had an underwhelming total of four medals, three from boxing and one from football.

It seems like boxing might as well be the sport that honors Ghana with gold, and Ghanaians are counting on the young Golden Ring Warrior to give it his best shot. The Ghana Olympic Committee President is on record to have said that Ghana was not going to bring home any medals this year.” “There’s no way we can win a medal in Tokyo 2020 but as they always say, in sports anything can happen”, Mr.Ben Nunoo Mensah said in a CITI TV interview last year.
