A blind Ghanaian student, Ebenezer Azamati, has been elected as the President of Oxford University‘s Africa Society.
The Oxford Africa Society (AfriSoc) champions the agenda of African students and the extensive alumni in various leadership positions all over the world.
Azamati won the position and takes over from Kenyan Elisha Ngetich.
The Twitter handle of the Oxford Africa Society made the announcement with a tweet.

“Congratulations to Ebenezer Azamati for being elected President of Oxford Africa Society (AfriSoc). Azamati is a Radcliffe Scholar reading for the DPhil International relations at University of Oxford and a member of Univ College,” they tweeted.
Azamati is a former University of Ghana Student who gained admission to read Masters of Science in International Politics at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.
After that program, he received the Cambridge International Scholarship, which is reserved for students from outside the European Union who would ordinarily fail to make it to Oxford without financial support.
He started his PhD program on the scholarship in October 2020.
Azamati made headlines in October 2019 when a video of him being maltreated by security on the campus went viral.
At the time, GhanaCelebrities.Com reported: “A blind Ghanaian student at Oxford University is demanding an apology and adequate compensation after he was manhandled by a security man at the school.
Ebenezer Azamati was carried out of an Oxford Union debating chamber for no apparent crime.
Ebenezer was “dragged by his ankles” out of the chamber by a security guard. His union card was confiscated and he was subsequently kicked out of the union.
His treatment was described as “violent, unjust, inhumane and shameful” by the Oxford University Africa Society (OUAS). Azamanti said he feels “unwelcome in the union, Oxford and even the country”.
