Ghanaian Graduate Wins Alumnus of the Year at Finnish University – Becomes First African In History to Do So

A Ghanaian graduate has been honoured with the Alumnus of the Year 2021 award by the Vaasa University of Applied Sciences (VAMK) in Finland.

Lukumanu Iddrisu, who graduated from the University about three years ago, was selected as the first-ever Alumnus of the Year winner.

The ceremony was held on Wednesday, October 6th 2021 and was the first ever Alumnus of the Year Awards held by VAMK.

By winning this honour, Iddrisu becomes the first African to attain such a feat in a Finnish institute of higher education.

He said after winning the award: “When I got admission to study at Vaasa University of Applied Sciences 7 years ago, my dream was to graduate and get a suitable job in Finland.

“I never imagined that whatever I did during and after school made a positive impact. I’m surprised but happy to emerge the first ever alumnus of the year.”

Iddrisu obtained admission to the Vaasa University of Applied Sciences in 2014 to study for a degree in International Business.

He left Ghana for the Nordic country where he currently resides and works.

He’s currently studying for a Master’s Degree in Strategic Business Development at the University.

The accomplished academic also works as a staff of the Wärstilä’s Human Resource and Employer Branding team.
