Kwame Asare Obeng aka A Plus has nabbed the first-ever Social Media Personality of the Year award at the maiden GhanaWeb Excellence Awards.
GhanaWeb has launched the maiden edition of this new awards scheme and the controversial musician cum social and political activist is among its inaugural winners.
A Plus emerged winner in a strong category which included Nana Aba Anamoah, Kwadwo Sheldon and Twitter influencer Kaly Jay.
He was honoured for his use of social media to influence socio-economic issues in the country and stimulate change.
A Plus expressed excitement after picking up the award and gave kudos to GhanaWeb for their initiative.
“Thank you for this special honour. I have no doubt in my mind that this award will go on to become one of the biggest awards in Ghana; I’m very happy to be the first winner of this category,” A Plus said on winning the award.
Over the years, A Plus has evolved his contributions to the Ghanaian zeitgeist.
Starting off as a musician, he branched into politics and social commentary by using his music as a means to criticise errant politicians.
A Plus’ power and influence however grew the most with the advent of social media.
Having built a powerful Facebook following, he possesses the unique ability to drive conversations on his page.
Every issue he raises gets public attention due to his massive following and thus can bring about results.
A Plus often uses his platform to call out corrupt politicians and organisations, an extension of the work he used to do through his music.
It’s undeniable that A Plus deserves this recognition, with Nana Aba Anamoah a close second.
The GhanaWeb Excellence Awards, according to organisers, is a people’s choice award scheme aimed at honouring personalities, groups and organisations that contribute substantially to the development of Ghana.
