GNAT Praises Akufo-Addo Over One Teacher, One Laptop Initiative

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has praised President Akufo-Addo over the government’s one teacher, one laptop initiative.

Under the initiative, every teacher in the country is to be presented with one laptop.

The government would bear 70% of the cost, with the rest to come out of the paycheck of the individual teacher.

The initiative was taken to court by two teacher unions but the case was thrown out.

Despite that, it appears teachers themselves are happy over the initiative.

Speaking at the 6th Quadrennial National Delegates Conference of GNAT, held in Kumasi today, the association praised the President for the initiative.

Mrs Philippa Larsen, National President of GNAT said: “Your excellency, I wish to commend you and your government for supplying customized laptops to teachers,”

She added: “We are grateful and wish to take this opportunity to remind the Minister of Education of other related issues that we had lengthy discussions on. We believe this is going to be done to ensure peace and tranquility on the educational front.”

The President in response, pledged to address issues raised by the teachers surrounding the initiative.

The ‘One Teacher, One Laptop’ initiative was launched by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia at St Mary’s SHS in Accra in September last year.

The initiative, according to him, was to fulfil government’s pledge to equip Ghana’s teachers with the needed skills to adequately train the next generation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
