The Despicable Me spin-off, Minions: The Rise Of Gru, has set a new 4th of July weekend box office record in the U.S.

The Universal Pictures/ Illimination Entertainment hit grossed roughly $125m for the Friday-Monday Independence Day 4-day slot.

The figure set a new record for the coveted 4th of July weekend slot.

It beat the previous record holder, 2011’s Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon, which grossed $115m in the same slot.

The Rise of Gru also achieved the second best opening in all of the Despicable Me/Minions franchise.

2015’s Minions was the only movie in the franchise to record a higher opening, according to PEOPLE.
