Veep Bawumia’s Digitisation Efforts Saves Ghana Hundreds of Millions Of Cedis In The Fight Against Corruption

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia‘s digitisation efforts have saved the taxpayer over hundreds of millions of cedis by tackling corruption at a level never before seen in Ghanaian history.

Available data shows that the digitisation drive has had the most profound impact on Ghana’s never-ending fight against corruption.

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) institution alone has been able to save a staggering Ghc 320m by eliminating over 6,000 ghost names from its books courtesy of digitisation.

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia revealed these cold hard facts during a recent address delivered to civil service workers in Accra.

The renowned economist stated the digitisation drive is ruthlessly and efficiently eliminating bloated payrolls and saving Ghana massive amounts of revenue which would otherwise have been lost to corruption.

The National Service Scheme saw similar savings to SSNIT as the digitised system implemented in recent times exposed names of tens of thousands of ghost names – in just one region.

Prior to the introduction of the digitised system, these ghost names would have seeped through the cracks and been paid – with the money pocketed by unscrupulous individuals.

The digitised system hence saved the country millions of cedis every month.

One sinister aspect of accepted corruption in Ghana, the operation of illegal agents (goro boys)  at the ports and Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority (DVLA), has been curtailed by the newly digitised systems put in place in these institutions.

Aside the ports and DVLA, institutions such as the passport office and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the introduction of e-tickets have all led to one resounding effect – eliminating or reducing corruption whilst increasing government revenue.

All these benefits are coming to fruition just as Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s forward-thinking and progressive Vice President, promised whilst pushing for the digitisation agenda.

Despite criticisms and mockery, the digitisation agenda is yielding fruits just as the Veep promised – with more to come as more and more Ghanaians are added to the Ghana card database.
