Former NBA superstar Dwyane Wade has filed court documents to change his transgender daughter’s name from her birth name, Zion to her new name Zaya.
Wade petitioned the Los Angeles Superior Court Thursday, August 18th 2022 to have his daughter’s name and gender changed to match her current gender identity.
Wade’s 15-year-old child wants her name changed from her birth name of Zion Malachi Airamis Wade to Zaya Malachi Airamis Wade.
She will also be a female in all court documents going forward, according to the filing.
Zaya is one of the basketball legends two children with ex-wife Siovaughn Funches.
According to Wade, Zaya has known she was transgender since she was three years old.
“She’s known since she was 3 years old,” he told “GMA” anchor Robin Roberts in February 2020.
“Along this way, we’ve asked questions and we’ve learned. But she’s known.”
Wade is currently married to banging Hollywood supermodel Gabrielle Union, with whom he shares a 3-year-old daughter Kaavia.

They also co-parent his children from earlier marriages.
“We take our roles and our responsibilities as parents very seriously,” Wade said of him and Zaya’s stepmother, Gabrielle Union,
“[We provide the children with the] best information that [they] can, the best feedback that [they] can, and that doesn’t change because s*xuality is now involved in it.”
