I Said ‘Nana Toaso’ Because Of Free SHS, I Don’t Owe Ghanaians Any Apology – Sarkodie

Ghanaian rapper, Michael Owusu Addo, popularly known as Sarkodie, has explained why he said ‘Nana toaso’ in 2020 before the elections, and why he hasn’t regretted it to this day despite the hardships in the country.

Sarkodie appeared on 3 Music TV’s Breakfast Show, Culture Daily, and spoke on many issues, including that controversial collaboration with Kuami Eugene, Happy Days.

On the song, Sark rapped a political line, praising the incumbent NPP government over free SHS and ending dumsor, adding that they deserve another term in office.

“Ntsi ndɜ sɜ meda kaniam na menba bɜkↄ skuul free dia ɜnie metu kye mamo Monfa mebone nkyeme nana toa so,” he rapped, to wit “So today I sleep with electricity and my kids would have free SHS then forgive me but Nana must continue,”

The song was controversial at the time – aside Sarkodie being accused of being paid to endorse the government, his co-star Kuami Eugene had zero idea the song had a political message and loudly complained about it!

Two years down the line, with Ghana embroiled in an economic mess, Sark defended his line and said he has no regrets over his choice.

“I think I benefitted from Free SHS directly and I have the right to say I endorse that. This is directly. My mum has these girls that she supports. At first, she calls me [about their school fees]. I’m not saying it’s much but just the fact that you’re not getting that call anymore… It came from that place and I was specific about what I was endorsing.” he said.
