I Don’t Steal Music – Kuami Eugene

Kuami Eugene, the popular Highlife artist, has spoken out about the recurring allegations that he “steals” music by sampling other artistes’ work. In an interview on Hitz FM, he addressed these claims, clarifying his approach to creating music and emphasizing that his process is misunderstood.

“I don’t ‘steal’ music,” Kuami Eugene said firmly, explaining that as an artist, he finds inspiration from a variety of sources. He shared how blending these influences helps him craft his distinct sound, which is a common practice in the music industry.

“Every artiste takes influences from different places,” he pointed out, referencing icons like Michael Jackson and Nigerian stars such as Davido and Wizkid, who have also borrowed lines or melodies from other works. “There’s nothing wrong with taking a line or two and modifying it to fit my style,” he added, emphasizing that this is something musicians do all the time.

Despite following these industry norms, Kuami Eugene expressed frustration over the criticism he faces. “I feel like many artists can get away with it, but for me, it’s like every time I release a hit that includes a line reminiscent of another artist’s work, I’m criticized,” he remarked. “It’s disheartening because I put a lot of effort into making my music original while drawing inspiration.”
