Ghana’s Black Stars have made it to the quarter-finals of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations and today at 16:00 GMT, they will take on Guinea in an attempt to secure a semi finals place—a match the Black Stars must win.

The Black Stars have beaten Guinea with ease recently so they will be walking onto the pitch as the favourite to win but when it comes to football, you cannot always bet on past glories and Guinea will be coming on to win too.

In a pre-match conference, Ghana’s coach- Avram Grant has said the “familiarity between both sides in recent times will make their quarter final clash on Sunday evening more difficult,” reports GhanaSoccernet.Com .

He said; “We played against them during qualification which means we know them and they know us,” Grant said in his pre-match press conference.

“But preparations are the same – training, meetings.

“We know that quarter finals is one game.

“This is not the group stage, in the group stage we lost one game and had to win the other two games to qualify [for quarter finals].

“I know Guinea, I saw their games and I must say they play very good football.

“They know how to play football and they have good players and they deserve to be here in the quarter finals.

“They will be a very tough team to beat.”

Slowly, the Black Stars are winning back the hearts of the many disappointed Ghanaian football fans and today’s win will go a long way to help their cause of mending broken relationship with the fans.

AFCON
AFCON

The first phase of the ongoing AFCON tournament has come to a successful end and as expected, the traditional maxim “the boys have been separated from the boys” has once again been consolidated.

I am however completely appalled by the hypocritical attitude of Ghanaians. After a poor outing in the first game in which the Black Stars lost 2-1, Ghanaians maligned the team and the highly reputable coach. They foretold doom for the Black Stars.

However the competence of the coach and his tactical approach to subsequent matches has proved that his repertoire is of high standard. Then this same insane people have started hailing him, bestowing all the nicest accolades you can ever imagine on him.

Let me divert my attention to the reason for this article. After the epic group stage encounters, here are some interesting fact recorded so far that highlights the beauty of the game that you haven’t been conscious of.

Gervinho was the first player to be red carded after needless tantrums with a Malian player.

AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS 2013: Ghana 1-0 Mali

Ghana Vrs Mail

Mubarak Wakaso scored a penalty to give Ghana a 1-0 win over Mali in African Cup of Nations Group B but only after the victors were helped on their way by a huge error by the referee in Port Elizabeth.

Ghana goalkeeper Fatau Duada clearly handled outside of his box on three minutes with Seydou Keita certain to have scored without the goalkeeper’s illegal antics.

It was a certain red card for denying Keita a goalscoring opportunity, but the referee Noumandiez Doue from the Ivory Coast – who would book seven players from a contest that was never a kicking match – somehow decided to produce a yellow rather than red card.

Keita slid the free-kick inches wide of the goal and the chance was lost.

With 11 men left on the park, Ghana went on to score the only goal of the afternoon from a forgettable contest on 38 minutes when Wakaso planted the ball high to the left of Mali goalkeeper Mamadou Samassa after Emmanuel Badu had been taken out of the game late by Adama Tamboura.
