92% Of 2017 BECE Candidates Receive Placement Into Free SHS Program – GES

The Ghana Education Service have announced the placement of students who wrote this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) into numerous Senior High Schools across the country.
A statement released by the Service and dated 31st August, 2017, reveals that 92% of students who took the exams qualified to be placed into SHS across the country.

BECE Supervisors Allegedly Taking Ghc 10 To Allow Students To Cheat

Some supervisors in the Greater Accra Region are allegedly taking as low as Ghc 10 from students to allow them the free rein to cheat in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Other examiners are also alleged to have made arrangements with schools, taking Ghc 200 so they are more lenient on their students during the exams.

Chief Prevents About 200 Candidates From Writing BECE

blankAbout 200 pupils from four communities at Bindi South in the Bunpkurugu –Yunyoo district of the Northern region failed to sit for the Basic Education Certificate Examinations which began today, Monday the 5th of June 2017, following a misunderstanding between chiefs and regional education authorities over location of examination centers.

According to Kolan Bentuaka, a staff at the District Education Directorate, the chief of Kanbatiak which is the largest community in the area, complained about the troubles the candidate in his town go through every year to write the exams and so he pleaded for a closer examination center. An agreement was reached between the chief and the Education Authorities in the region for a new center. The new center was however sent to the Gbankoni community with center code 81410 angering the chief and some parents who did not understand why the center was given to Gbankoni instead of Kanbatiak which has larger number of registered students and infrastructure and so prevented the candidates from traveling to the new center to write the exams.

Professor Stephen Adei Calls For BECE To Be Reduced To The Four Core Subjects

The former head of the Ghana Institute of Management and Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Adei, has suggested that the final exam at the Basic Level should be reduced to just the four core subjects.
Mathematics, English Language, Social Studies and Integrated Science should be the only subjects students are examined on, Professor Adei suggested.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results for this year’s examinations that was hit by widespread leakage of papers.

In one of the most widespread leakages the Council has been hit with, five papers were leaked on a very large scale, and WAEC was forced to cancel those papers and have the students resit.
