Kumawood Is Back With Our Judges Parts 1&2 | What More Can We Say Again

Our Judges

Over the years, we’ve written several articles about the deteriorating state of our movie industry – that’s if we truly have one functioning.

One of the key areas we keep hammering is how our scriptwriters go about writing their plots for various movies. Whilst the English speaking Ghallywood keep ‘stealing’ storylines from foreign producers, our Twi speaking Kumawood rely heavily on trending events making headlines in the country.

Which Industry Has Seen Amazing Growth? The Ghana Movie Industry or the Music Industry?

Reggie Rockstone

Over the years, we’ve seen significant improvements in both our Ghanaian movie industry and the music industry—though we are still on the hope road for that day when we can look at things and say, we’ve truly arrived.

Few years ago, the movie industry had diverse stories to tell but the actors, directors and even equipment to be used in telling these stories were a MESS, and that gave us different faces of sub-standard productions. Even today, we still have such sub-standard productions, but things are a fairly better than those years I am talking about.

Similarly, the Ghana music industry has its own dark days with poor music videos and sound quality being the hallmark of that era. Ironically, we seem to have had some good songs (I mean lyrically) during these dark days when we did not have up-to-date studios, sound engineers and production equipment.

When Quantity Is Chosen Over Quality, Shoddy Works Are Produced | The Industry As We See It

Shatta Wale
Shatta Wale

Without any definition of terms, I assume the words quantity and quality are understood by almost everybody who is reading this article.

In our various works, we all strive to achieve what is best but it becomes absurd when a person decides to choose quantity over quality (excellence).

Let’s delve into the movie industry a bit (focusing largely on Kumawood). Countless new movies are released each and every day. Enter a movie shop you see around and ask for the latest Ghanaian movie in town. Over hundred movie CDs would be handed to you.

There wouldn’t be any problem if these movies are of high quality and good storylines. I sometimes wonder the kind of cameras they use to shoot those movies. I guess my phone’s camera can do a better job than the cameras they use. The picture and sound qualities of most of the so – called Ghanaian movies are nothing to write home about.

Yet, when you complain, all that the industry players can afford to tell you is to support your own and stop backbiting. How do I support something in which those involved are doing nothing to advance it? What is backbiting about putting the bare facts on the ground?

As human as I am, I work hard to earn money. It would therefore be sensible to spend that hard – earned money on things that are of good qualities. So when I patronise foreign movies, it is not that I want their industry to grow and leave ours hanging. It’s a simple logic; I want value my money.

Ghana Movie Industry Can Be Lucrative – Former President’s Son, Edward Agyekum Kuffour

blank
Ghana’s former President His Excellency John Agyekum Kuffour’s second son has also added his voice to the fact that, the country’s movie industry has the potential of being lucrative, if the needed investment and support are shifted to the direction and benefit of the industry.
Speaking to journalists after screening of the latest Ghanaian movie ‘Wrong Target’ to the media, Mr. Agyekum Kuffour said it is only when people show interest and offer their support to the growing industry that, it has a potential of being lucrative.
Describing the industry as ‘growing’ and doing well lately, he said he hopes to bring attention to the industry especially as a son of the former Head of State.
“I can’t stop being a child of a politician. I didn’t choose that. I was born into the family and it’s been a blessing. So if my presence here with that background [as the son of the former president] will help the industry, then so be it”, he said confidently.
Mr. Edward Agyekum Kuffour who appears to have developed a sudden knack for movies said the current crop of actors and crew memebers in the industry are doing marvelous.
