The Ministry of Local Government has ordered the Births and Deaths registry to reverse their ban on the registering of names which they have branded as ‘titles’.
The hugely unpopular policy said parents cannot register their children with names such as ‘Nii’, ‘Nana’, ‘Togbe’ and many other names which often accompany local names.
The government has announced the creation of 30 new districts and 60 new municipalities in a move meant to further decentralise the governance process.
A new legislative instrument was thus placed before Parliament earlier this week detailing the new changes.
Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak, has threatened to sue Local Government minister designate, Hajia Alima Mahama, for ordering that all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCE’s) vacate their offices.
According to the NDC MP, Hajia Alima has no locus to take that action since she has not been sworn in as a substantive minister, therefore he is giving her and government till Monday to reverse the action or face him at the Supreme Court.
