What is The GFA’s Motive in Sacking Kwesi Appiah Just Months into a New Deal? Is There Some Underhand Deal Going On?

Kwesi Appiah
Kwesi Appiah

Kwesi Appiah was sacked (finally) by the Ghana Football Association yesterday, only a few months into his new two year deal, paving the way for the return of Milovan Rajevac as the new Black Stars coach.

Whilst most people, including myself, felt that the dismissal of Kwesi Appiah was long overdue, one cannot help but feel that there is something suspiciously off concerning the timing of the dismissal.

Kwesi Appiah signed a two year contract extension in July, in a deal expected to run through July 2016. If you believe the figures flying around, he pocketed a $100, 000 signing on fee, with a monthly salary of almost $40, 000.

Considering the huge sums in the contract, the two year duration, and the GFA having terminated it, you better believe there is going to be a huge severance package for Kwesi Appiah. Having agreed to pay him a certain amount over the next two years, and then having reneged on it, the severance must be a sizeable chunk of what he expected to make had all the terms of the contract been carried out.

The Chelsea fans amongst you should be very familiar with this, Roman Abramovich having carved out a niche as the king of paying out multimillion dollar severance packages.

With this expense, coupled with whatever millions Milo is now coming to make, one wonders what the motive could be for the GFA in retaining Appiah, only to sack him a few months later.

It’s not like the writing had not been on the wall for a while now. Everyone and their mother who saw what happened in Brazil could testify that Kwesi Appiah was a dead man walking. He lost control of his players, his tactics were horrible, his substitutions worse. He played his best playmaker as a defender, and benched two of his best players against the USA, waiting for his opponents to ‘get tired’.

So under this circumstances you cannot argue for logical reasons being behind his contract extension, because that just does not fly. If Kwesi Appiah was such a dead man walking and everyone knew, why then give him such a mega contract extension?

Ghana Black Stars’ Coach-Kwesi Appiah SACKED?

James Kwesi Appiah
James Kwesi Appiah

According to multiple media reports, Ghana Black Stars’ coach-Kwesi Appiah who has had more than a rough time, let’s say he has performed very poor than anyone expected, has been silently sacked—and tomorrow, this will be made official.

Kwesi Appiah is tipped to be replaced by Serb Milovan Rajevac who flew into the country few days ago to take the post of a Technical advisor.

Apparently, Akwesi Appiah’s popularity among the Executive Committee members of the Ghana Football Association has dropped to zero—and the poor performance of the Black Stars in the last two matches seem to be how far the GFA is ready to risk things with Appiah.

GFA Renders Apology to Ghanaians | It’s Reform We Need, Not Apologies

GFA President-Kwesi Nyantakyi
GFA President-Kwesi Nyantakyi

The Black Stars returned to Ghana one of the worst teams at this year’s world cup, both on the pitch and off it. Ghanaians everywhere witnessed the sorry state of affairs within the team, leading to not only our elimination but humiliation at the hands of the world media.

Now we are to believe all is well, and forget everything that happened because the Ghana Football Association has rendered an unqualified apology to the people of Ghana, and for equal measure has assured us of their desire to move forward with Kwesi Appiah.

For the charges of corruption, poor organisation, and poor tactics there was no response, save an apology to soothe our hearts and allow them lead us forward to greater heights.

“Admittedly the performance of the team fell below the expectations of many Ghanaians” Mr Kwesi Nyantakyi, the FA President said at a press briefing organised this afternoon.

“Our inability to qualify to the second round broke many Ghanaian hearts. We wish to offer our unqualified apologies for the disappointment.”

At least they have the grace to have realised Ghanaians were far from pleased with the appearance we made, but for those who have many questions this apology would be poor recompense.

The GFA President also admitted that the Management Committees are going to be reviewed, not only that of the Black Stars of all the national teams. This is slightly more welcome news, but the results this “review” would yield remains to be seen.

Many questions have been raised over the efficacy of these committees, particularly after it emerged Ghana sent three times more officials than players to the world cup. Sulley Muntari got into a fracas with one of the committee members, and despite his reprehensible actions, he raised legitimate questions about the role of all these officials.

2014 FIFA WORLD CUP: Injury Boost for Portugal As Cristiano Ronaldo Returns to Training | Kwaku Bonsam What NEXT?

Fifa-World-Cup-Brazil-20141

Ghana’s world cup Group G opponents Portugal received a timely boost to their preparations with the announcement that Cristiano Ronaldo and Raul Meireles are set to join the team in training having recovered from separate knocks.

The issue of the availability or otherwise of Ronaldo has resonated around the world since his injury came to light, but the Portuguese Football Association has put the issue to bed with a statement indicating his return to training.

This news follows on the heels of claims by Ghanaian witch doctor Kwaku Bonsam that he orchestrated Ronaldo’s injury to keep him from playing against Ghana. It now seems like the obvious attempt for publicity and fame might have been made by the Ghanaian witch doctor a little too soon.

Either way, Ghana’s coach Kwesi Appiah must conduct Ghana’s preparations with the glaring threat of this season’s UEFA Champion’s league top scorer in mind.

Remaining in the Black Stars camp, coach-Kwesi Appiah has announced that his lack of depth in defence would be covered by the presence of versatile midfielders like Michael Essien and Kwadwo Asamoah.

The injury to Jerry Akaminko and exclusion of left back Jeffrey Schlupp means the Ghanaian squad is a little thin at the back, but in defiant tones Kwesi Appiah told the press at the team’s base in Miami that he had other options.
