Last year the most wanted celebrity bachelor and the man many women outside Ghana have accused of swindling them out of huge sums of money with the promise of marrying them, John Dumelo finally tied the knot.
He got married to a lawyer and socialite by name Mawunya who is the younger sister of actress and television host Selassie Ibrahim at a colourful ceremony in Accra.
Obviously, John Dumelo and his new-wedded wife, Mawunya are currently the happiest couple on the surface of the earth after they happily tied the knot last Saturday.
John Dumelo being a romantic man took to the floor and sang the Methodist hymn ‘Amazing Grace’ for his wife, Mawunya.
Smarttys Management and Production Limited has repayed the final instalment of the Ghc 1.5m that they were supposedly overpaid to brand Metro Mass buses with the likeness of Ghana’s Presidents.
The company had made earlier payments in January and February, and paid the last instalment with a letter dated March 31, the final day for payment under the terms of the deal they struck with the Attorney General’s department.
Smarttys Management and Productions, the company headed by Selassie Ibrahim; has denied any involvement in the $92m rural electrification deal that passed parliament Monday.
In a statement released Tuesday, the company said that reports tying them to the deal were ‘mischievous’ and ‘defamatory’, and threatened to sue media houses who run the story.
After the bus branding fiasco involving Selassie Ibrahim’s Smarttys, one would think that the government of Ghana would stay a million miles away from any deal involving this woman and her company- one would be wrong.
Because in Parliament on Monday, the NDC majority passed a rural electrification deal which involves Smartty’s Limited, and which an independent assessment has found as overpriced by $9m- over the strident complaints of the minority.
It’s not like anyone is surprised here- the deal was fishy from the start, but it obviously would not have gone through without collusion from high places.
So asking for some money to be refunded and then everyone goes their way is just a way to look like remedying the situation without actually doing anything.
The status quo in Ghana is that you fleece the state, and if you’re unfortunate enough to be caught you just pay back the money and go your way, no harm no foul.
Which powerful person goes to jail for fraud in Ghana? Why punish those who steal millions when you can punish those who steal goats and 100 cedis out of necessity and poverty?
The fallout from the bus branding saga is yet to die down, yet it looks like we have another one brewing, involving actress Selassie Ibrahim again.
Selassie’s Company Smartty’s Management and Productions carried out the bus branding, which somehow cost the taxpayer Ghc 3.6m. It has launched an investigation, led to a Minister’s resignation, and raised questions about what role her NDC guru husband is playing in all this– but somehow she retains the trust of government enough to be considered for another contract.
The level of outrage is high, as Ghanaians try and fail to understand how our beloved country sunk to this level, of brazen public corruption and a leadership that simply does not care.
Whilst the default position should always be do not be corrupt, or at least carry it out in moderation- the norm in our country these days is do it in excess, and lie through your teeth when the public finds out.
