Ghanaian Movie Stars And the Movies That Shot Them to FAME–From the Perspective of Chris-Vincent

[caption id="attachment_89162" align="aligncenter" width="662"] Perfect Picture[/caption] There's always that triggering factor, that single event that catapults a person to fame--even if there have been several attempts to achieve this. However, it's difficult to measure what shot a person to fame for everybody. And this is because we all do not catch up at the same time--some people join the party when it's almost over. Therefore, I wouldn't be able to erect a sound argument that, the below movies shot the accompanying celebrities to fame for everybody but I believe my selections will sit well with a large number of people. I've seen the contemporary Ghanaian movie industry grow from nothing. I vividly remember the humbling beginnings of folks like Lydia Forson, Yvonne Nelson, Christabel Ekeh, Roselyn Ngissah, John Dumelo and many others. We launched GhanaCelebrities.Com almost a decade ago, at a time when Entertainment or Celebrity blogging was new to the Ghanaian landscape and we've followed events, the good and the bad--to where we are today. For this reason, I am sure this goes beyond presenting the movies that shot these stars to fame just from my perspective, but from a perspective well grounded in facts--without forgetting the relevance of time. Now, let's look at the movies that shot our stars to fame--flip to the next pages for them! [caption id="attachment_73350" align="aligncenter" width="770"] Juliet Ibrahim[/caption] Juliet Ibrahim--Crime to Christ Juliet Ibrahim's debut movie was exactly what threw her into the world of fame. If you ever watched Crime to Christ, there was no way you would have missed the Juliet Ibrahim factor--her strange strong accent and the infamous K-legs. Now, the legs have all Now, the legs have all straightened (Juliet herself laughs to this whenever I mention it) and the confusion in her accent has totally disappeared. [caption id="attachment_64244" align="aligncenter" width="618"] Yvonne Nelson[/caption] Yvonne Nelson--Princess Tyra Despite the fact that Princess Tyra was an embodiment of exaggeration and far cut from reality in terms of plot, actress-Yvonne Nelson owns everything today to the production. Princess Tyra's success was very much based on time; the movie somewhat kick-started the dead engine of the Ghanaian movie train---and the internet penetration helped in igniting the fire. If you watch the movie again today, you wouldn't find it that brilliant and would certainly wonder how it became so popular then. To me, it was nothing more than the timing. [caption id="attachment_75206" align="aligncenter" width="750"] Lydia Forson[/caption] Lydia Forson--The Perfect Picture I don't think there's an argument as to whether Lydia Forson owns her fame to Shirley Frimpong-Manso and her Sparrow Productions or not. Prior to The Perfect Picture, Forson had had Showbiz stints but she was probably not known beyond her neighbourhood. The Perfect Picture showcased her talent to the then emerging Ghanaian movie industry--rewarding her with a fame she has since enjoyed and built on. [caption id="attachment_73118" align="aligncenter" width="750"] Nadia Buari[/caption] Nadia Buari--Beyonce-The President Daughter In 2006, the Nadia Buari brand started to crystallize--all because she had played in an unending movie, Beyonce-The President Daughter. This movie was shown on almost every Ghanaian TV station and the sequel, The Return of Beyoncé further aided in shaping the Nadia Buari image in our minds. [caption id="attachment_72224" align="aligncenter" width="770"] Van Vicker[/caption] Van Vicker--Beyonce-The President Daughter Nadia Buari and Van Vicker became famous on the back of the same movie--perhaps, there's another person to be mentioned later. This was the era of cronyism in the Ghana Movie Industry--when just being light skinned was enough to score you a major movie role. Vicker was not a brilliant actor and he has never been. But he had this charisma that worked magic for him--of course coupled with his appearance and colour. Instantly, he became an attractive name among young adult Ghanaian women. [caption id="attachment_64479" align="aligncenter" width="618"] Martha Ankomah[/caption] Martha Ankomah--Kiss Me If You Can Kiss Me If You Can had an attention-grabbing element--it was wild, raunchy and literally started the whole gross nudity era we briefly enjoyed or became ashamed of. A lot of people watched the movie out of curiosity and not that it was any good. And this is how Martha Ankomah shot to fame. Unfortunately, Martha's fame hit a glass ceiling so early--and she has not been able to break it. [caption id="attachment_62911" align="aligncenter" width="618"] Jackie Appiah[/caption] Jackie Appiah--Beyoncé - The President Daughter Jackie Appiah remains my favourite star for the fact that, though her fame has a beginning, it was not an instant jackpot--she grew it. For me, Beyoncé - The President Daughter once again introduced Jackie Appiah to several Ghanaian movie lovers. Some fell in love with her from the days of 'Things We Do For Love.' From Beyoncé - The President Daughter, the next time she took over our screens with 'might' was when she starred in The Perfect Picture. [caption id="attachment_67145" align="aligncenter" width="570"] Actor John Dumelo[/caption] John Dumelo--The Prince's Bride John Dumelo had his first movie role as a child in Baby Thief but that did nothing for his career or the sort of fame he enjoys today. Many African movie lovers first gave attention to John Dumelo when he appeared in The Prince's Bride--at least, that's when I started paying attention to him as an actor. Just like Van Vicker, John's fame rests more on his personality than acting brilliance. Perhaps, that explains why he's not won many awards to mirror his popularity. [caption id="attachment_53984" align="aligncenter" width="618"] Joselyn Dumas[/caption] Joselyn Canfor Dumas--Adams Apples To think that Joselyn Dumas was in The Perfect Picture and A Sting in A Tale and yet could not score any attention in these two movies that shot others to fame is a little weird. Probably, her hips were not zoomed on a lot in these movies--I mean they were not accentuated on screen. Dumas became a familiar name on the back of Adams Apples--once again, not for any amazing performance but appearance. She was one of the lead characters and that fetched her a lot of camera time--meaning, Ghanaians began to notice her hips and beauty. And then the conversation started. [caption id="attachment_88703" align="aligncenter" width="750"] Naa Ashorkor[/caption] Naa Ashorkor Mensah-Doku--Adams Apples Naa Ashorkor is in a box with many others who sort of own their fame to Sparrow Productions. Even though Naa Ashorkor has featured in other movies, her role as Kukuaa in Adams Apples brought her to a wider audience. CheckMate, Scorned and even The Perfect Picture did not push her as far as her numerous Adams Apples' appearances did. For me, Naa as a person is not cut for Showbiz and that's why her fame has stalled. [caption id="attachment_25715" align="aligncenter" width="618"] Adjetey Anang[/caption] Adjetey Anang (Pusher)--Things We Do for Love Adjetey Anang is a brilliant actor who has featured in almost every Sparrow Productions' movies but his actual fame precedes Sparrow. He has achieved success in recent times but none has been able to fetch him the magnitude of fame Things We Do for Love bathed him in. A lot of Ghanaians remember him for his role as Pusher--than anything else. [caption id="attachment_86305" align="aligncenter" width="603"] Majid Michel[/caption] Majid Michel--Crime to Christ Majid Michel was famous in Things We Do for Love too--but Pusher stood out. And for me, Majid's claim to real fame was his abysmal performance in Crime to Christ. His attempt to wow Africans with that Tony Montana of ScarFace's style was laughable. Nevertheless, he made a name for himself from the movie--and broke into Nigeria on the back of it. [caption id="attachment_71318" align="aligncenter" width="640"] Prince David Osei[/caption] Prince David Osei--Kiss Me If You Can Prince David Osei has had a stint with a 'Hollywood production' but that was not even able to break the Kiss Me If You fame chain that hangs around his neck. [caption id="attachment_56428" align="aligncenter" width="618"] Kafui Danku[/caption] Kafui Danku--A Letter to My Mother Kafui Danku has still not achieved that intense cut-cross fame and I think it's due to the fact that her on-screen appearances are mostly from her own productions. For me, the breakthrough has not 'arrived' yet and she may quit showbiz with the sort of 'average fame' she so far has... However, many would have first taken notice of her in her self-produced movie, A Letter to My Mother. [caption id="attachment_47295" align="aligncenter" width="618"] Christabel Ekeh[/caption] Christabel Ekeh--Potomanto Writing this has reminded me about how instrumental GhanaCelebrities.Com was in fetching Christabel Ekeh the fame she rides on today. I cannot really point out a movie that I can boldly say introduced her to a lot of people--beyond the many interesting photos of her we bombarded our readers with when she was finding her feet. Of course she has gone on to do some brilliant movies like Potomanto which would have brought her to the reach of others. But her fame seems to have been achieved not on the back of her movies. Agya Koo, Lil Win, Nana Ama McBrown, Kyeiwaa, Kwaku Manu, Yaw Dabo and others Kumawood has existed in the shadows and for many of the industry's great actors, it is difficult to pinpoint a movie that shot them to fame. Most of these actors hover around for long in Kumawood movies, before finally grab the attention of Ghanaians. For this reason, I want to know which movies introduced these people to you---I mean, when did you really take note of them?
