Israel, the so-called ‘Promised Land’ that Ghanaians are always raving about, is nothing like the utopian birthplace of Christ that most people think it is. Benjamin Netanyahu runs an iron fisted regime which steals more land from Palestinians every day and keeps them living under oppression.
Not just that, the country which was founded for Jews to sojourn in after the massacre of World War II is not particularly immigrant friendly, and have recently announced plans to kick out thousands of African migrants.
These are immigrants who entered the country illegally, some of whom the Israeli government has realized would be persecuted if sent back home.
However, they have been given the choice of returning to Africa or face an indefinite prison term.
The immigrants, most of them from Eritrea and Sudan, have been given the chance to relocate to Uganda or Rwanda if they are afraid to go back home, but some say they’ll rather brave prison in Israel than go to any of those two countries.
“I won’t go there. Guys who were here and went to Rwanda and Uganda we saw what happened to them” one migrant said.
For now, Israel’s ultimatum is till 1st April, and those who leave before then would get a cash incentive of $3,500. Anyone who stays beyond the date risks indefinite incarceration.
