NDC Wins Violence Marred Talensi By-Election

The thirst for power amongst our bone headed politicians ensured a pretty inconsequential by-election in a remote northern constituency was turned into a bloody battlefield.

After the day of voting and counting by the electoral commission, the NDC were declared winners of the elections.

Benson Tongo Baba, who represented the ruling party,  polled 10, 366 votes representing 42.31% of the total votes.  The NPP’s Wuni Thomas Buanab polled 6,845 votes representing 27.94%,  whilst the  PNC’s Wombeo Namal Teng followed closely with 6,836 representing 27.90% of the total votes.

This was a seat held by the NDC for years before the NPP wrestled it away in the last elections, so it’s not much of a surprise they’ve captured their seat back. The problem is the lengths they went to in trying to regain their seat.

Earleieports from Talensi indicated the climate had turned violent.

In the morning a group of people travelling within the constituency armed to the teeth where intercepted by police, whilst latest reports indicated a pro-NDC group had attacked some NPP functionaries, leading to the injury of NPP’s first vice chair Freddie Blay.

There were clashes between police and rowdy groups, whilst the run up to the election was filled with both big parties sharing money and other goodies to the populace.

We have very little inkling of what being a democracy means.

The Talensi seat became vacant after the incumbent NPP MP, Robert Nachinab Doameng Mosore resigned to take up the position of a paramount chief of Tongo.
