Often we hear stories of Ghanaian sporting greats falling on hard times after their careers have ended, a problem that cuts across disciplines.
Daniel Kotei Poison and Ebo Danquah both raised high the flag of Ghana in their day. Poison was the first Ghanaian to win a world title, when he beat Mexico’s Ruben Olivares to the WBC featherweight title in 1975.
The Ghana Boxing Authority wrote to the world governing body to request participation in a grant the body has set up, which aims at helping former champions get back on their feet.
Although the application was made in 2014, the money just arrived this year, and was presented to the pair at a ceremony in Accra.
D.K Poison received $4,800 whilst Danquah received $3,600 from the WBC, presented by Peter Zwennes, chairperson of the Ghana Boxing Authority who spearheaded the efforts to get the money.
Zwennes announced they have commenced the process to secure funds for other legends of the sport.
