Feminist movements have led a heavy criticism against Minister of Gender, Women and Social Protection, Otiko Afisa Djaba for warning girls that wearing short dresses also attracts rape.

Otiko Djaba made the comment at the 90th anniversary and Speech and Prize giving Day of the Krobo Girls Presbyterian Senior High School in the Eastern region, where she cautioned girls to be responsible for choices they make as the return of some of those choices will be detrimental to their lives/career.

Of all Madam Otiko told the girls, a cross section of Ghanaians (most feminist advocates) argued that no girl no matter any means attracts rape and the Minister must retract her statement as it rather supports such sexual violence against girls.

However, Otiko Djaba who refused similar calls for her to retract ill comments about Ex-President Mahama, has once again gone by her norm to defend her statement.

Speaking to Kasapa News, Otiko Afisa Djaba reiterated that she did not encouraged sexual assaults on young girls who wear provocative dresses and that her comment was carved as an advice every mother will offer her daughters.

“It was a strong advice from a mother to her children. I wasn’t in anyway encouraging rape with my comments. I have daughters and if they dress in a certain way and they are going out, I call them and ask them to change it or wear another clothing over what they are already wearing. Any good parent will say what I said. In this world there’s no right without responsibility when I talk to young girls about their rights it’s in order. This a democracy but the best interest of the girls must be ensured at all times and we shall always work towards that.” she said.
