Religions are always on the look out for the next generation of zealots, which is why they drill into members the need to make sure their children follow in their footsteps.
Indeed, one of the reasons for the perpetual success of religion is that it is drilled into children at a time when they do not know any better; ensuring that by the time they do know any better, it’s wrapped in their entire identity and nigh impossible to shrug off.
Which is why atheists and secularists insist that it’s plain wrong to teach children about, just to take one instance, the concept of hell – a place a supposedly loving father created for you to be tortured if you don’t love him back. It skates pretty close to mental blackmail, and it informs that child’s worldview for the rest of his life, whether consciously or unconsciously.
It extends to all other religious beliefs, including this entirely abominable one found in a church’s guide on how to teach children about offertory and tithes.
The page is reportedly from a book used by the Redeemed Christian Church of God, whose pastor Enoch Adeboye (recently in the news giving relationship advice) is one of the richest in the world. Perhaps he got all that wealth by taxing children.
According to the book, the teachers are to tell the children that refusing to pay tithes and offertory is ‘robbing God’. Why the hell children have to pay tithes is never explained, just that they have to.
So when you fear this God, who can condemn you to eternal torture, and now you’re being told you’re robbing him – how is that supposed to lead to a healthy, normal, childhood? Why do children have to carry the burden of tithes, which as we all know is 10% of income. Freaking income!
We know pastors would do anything for money, but this is beyond the pale.
