The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Mike Ocquaye, has called for the laws of Ghana to be made much clearer in regards to homos*xuality, and for the practice to be criminalised entirely.

Prof Ocquaye was speaking during a meeting with the head of Royal House Chapel, Rev Sam Korankye, who led a delegation from the church to pay a courtesy call on him.

Laws in Ghana criminalise ‘sodomy’, although not explicitly, under the ‘unnatural carnage knowledge’ stipulation – but the law does not specifically target gays. Theoretically, a heteros*xual couple could be jailed for having anal s*x.

But Mike Ocquaye is calling for a more incisive law targeting gays, saying the practice is unnatural and alien to our culture.

“It is unfortunate that people have become so liberal that they will want to liberalise Christianity…even priests are approving of homos*xuality and allowing a man and a man [to] marry, a woman and a woman [to] marry and these are manifest abominations.” Prof Ocquaye told Rev Ankrah.

“I trust that with your kind of insistence, the Parliament of Ghana…will find its way clear in strengthening the laws to ban homos*xuality as they exist.”

He added: “As for this, may God forbid that it becomes a Ghanaian culture,”

Professor Ocquye, professing to be Christian, is calling for our laws to explicitly criminalise homos*xuality because it’s not a part of Ghanaian culture. I guess nobody told him that Christianity was not a part of Ghanaian culture until it was forced down our throats by colonialists.

If we’re banning things not part of our culture I suggest we start from those two middle eastern religions.
