Afrobeat Sunday has come and gone and from my point of view, a programme which was birthed just a couple of years ago has grown past a ‘2- year- old toddler’. The event in general was well organized. Good performances from artistes – some of them I’m not familiar with.
I can rightly say the event organizers did a good job—from the time I stepped into the O2 arena in London, through to the time I dragged myself home.
Turn-out was impressive, not only by Ghanaians/Africans but from all walks of life. With all the madness in London past weekend, the security out there was enough to keep my mind at rest.
Time Keeping: Nothing to complain about. I was torn between observing the ‘Ghana Man Time’ (GMT) and the ‘white man’ time, either to turn up early or late; as is always the case with ‘Ghanaian events’, because I’ve been to events where organisers painfully disregard the importance of time keeping. I got to the venue some minutes past the advertised time (9pm). Press desk was opened with a helpful and cheerful lady who assisted me through to the VIP area.
Performances: Billed to perform that night were D-Black, Joey B, Project G, Vibe Squad and May7even among others. Nice dance moves from Project G (dancing group).
I was expecting to see ‘Vera’ (the lady with the Very Enormous Round A***) with D-Black and Joey B on stage, but there was no Vera. There was splendid performance from May7even. She’s just a delight to watch on stage – call it stagecraft.
Vibe Squad did well as well as the others. Do I need to blab about DJ Abrantee? No need! The guy is good at what he does, just brilliant. In a nutshell, performances were good but it will be lovely if artistes perform a bit longer.
There was never a dull moment. You ‘eat as much as you like at a good price’ – literally (not to say organisers should increase ticket prices), good Afrobeat DJ’s, artistes and music.
As at the time I left the venue, DJ Abrantee was doing his thing and patrons were dancing their hearts out. Will Azonto fade out? I doubt it!
Afrobeat Sunday was a successful event, one worth attending. Big thumps-up to all the team for the good organisation, public relations and above all, a good night.
If you’re a Ghanaian and you don’t know how to Azonto….bad news. ‘White’ gals were ‘Azontoing’.
