The situation in Egypt is not one to write home about; protests and counter protests and police brutality- the only constant is that the people are the ones who suffer.

Former President Mohammed Morsi, who was ousted by the Egyptian military in 2013, has since been on trial for an incident in 2012 when his Muslim Brotherhood killed a journalist and opposition supporters massed in protest outside the Presidential Palace.

He was convicted on the charge of inciting violence and handed down a 20 year sentence.

Morsi was Egypt’s first democratically elected leader, but lasted just a year in office before being ousted by the military on the heels of mass civilian protests.

Other leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood were also on trial with him, and received similar sentences for the same charges.
