The recent spate of xenophobic attacks were sickening and disgusting, and for a while it looked like the South African government was doing very little to combat the attacks.
Things have died down a bit since, but it seems to have caused some harm to South Africa’s relations to the countries whose citizens where so callously attacked.
Nigeria over the weekend recalled her High Commissioner and his deputy from South Africa, in apparent protest of the violent attacks. This course of actions seems not to have gone down too well with South Africa.
In response, South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Co-Operation has released a statement criticising the decision. According to them, the South African government cannot be blamed for the attacks, just as they did not blame the Nigerian government when scores of their nationals died in the synagogue building collapse.
They continue that they remain committed to a bilateral relationship with Nigeria, and would work through diplomatic channels to solve this issue.
