Mefiri Ghana – An Idea That Turned Into Reality

blankMefiri Ghana, the clothing line with a name that has a powerful tone to it yet so simple in meaning. It has got so many Ghanaians talking and looking funky since it started a year ago by two cousins. Arnold Sarfo-Kantanka and Nana Adu-Sarfo have paved ways for young Ghanaians to be able learn about their roots and to educate the world about their heritage.

Mefiri Ghana a brand within a business called APOM ( A part of me) wanted to tell people about Ghana last year but now they want people to enter the world of Mefiri Ghana and experience what is to be a Ghanaian.

They stop by to give Ghana celebrities an exclusive interview on how it all started and what Ghanaians can expect from them, so if you don’t know about Mefiri Ghana, then get familiar.

Ghanacelebrities.com: I know you’ve heard this question so many times but tell me how did you start Mefiri Ghana?

Arnold: I saw my friend wearing a top which was cool and snazzy but I wanted something that represented me. Looking around the market I couldn’t really find anything that was modern which express that I am from Ghana without having to say it in English Language. Looking back at the time, around the 51st or the 52nd Ghana Independence, I read a quote that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah once said that Ghana Independence is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African continent. As we do, we talk a lot but we don’t do a lot, not a lot of us are proactive. So rather than just talking about it I teamed up with my cousin Nana who had a similar idea about doing a T-shirt.

Nana: Like Arnold, I hadn’t seen any T-shirts that would entice me to wear, you want something that represents that you are from Ghana. I was born here but I am very proud of my roots. I wanted to design T-shirts that express that in a fresh and funky way which young people can relate to. We were talking about doing the same things but in separate ways but we decided to come together as cousins and go in the same direction.

Ghanacelebrities.com: Starting only a year ago and having to be part of some of memorable events in the Ghanaian communities such as Miss Ghana, Ghana Independence and Meet me there, how do you think you have grown as a company within the past year?

Arnold: Thanks to God because from an idea being turned into reality and grabbing the attention of the Ghanaian community and the biggest promoters West coast and Akwaaba both embracing it has been amazing. The high Commissioner has seen it and taken to it, the youths following have been following it as well. We have 3000 followers on face book alone. We started a website in October last year, looking on the website the other day, we realised we’ve had enquiries from people in Australia, North America, Norway and Canada. And its shocking because we have not used any marketing strategies to promote Mefiri Ghana. That made us think that it will really grow when we start looking for partnership this year and start marketing. We believe something special has been birthed here. Nana and I never thought we will one day become clothing designers.

Ghanacelebrities.com: Going back to what you said earlier, you read a quote by Kwame Nkrumah saying the Independence of Ghana will only be meaningful if all African Nations liberate together. Are you looking to widen your market across Africa?

Nana: I guess when we first started we had to start from home and what we know. A part of me (APOM)) is encompasses the whole of Africa and we got so many different things coming up, not for only Ghanaians but the whole of Africa. We are going to have events and blogs where people can come and get information – not even just Africans, we want people from al over the world to come in and see what Africa is all about.

Watch out for Mefiri Ghana’s event on the 5th of March 2010 called the 4ward ever. If you want to enter the world of being a Ghanaian or if you simply want to have a fun night out then be there. More info will be updated on the site shortly.
