John Osei Tutu Agyeman, commonly known as J.O.T. Agyeman, is one of the most popular Ghanaian actors of all time. In addition to his acting abilities, JOT is also a TV Anchor who has appeared on a number of popular Ghana television programs.
Born on the 28th of June 1966 in Dixcove on the west coast of Ghana, JOT – the youngest of ten children- attended Prempeh College for his high school studies, before going on to study Theatre Arts at the University of Ghana in Legon.
His entertainment career ultimately began on stage at Legon’s School of Performing Arts.
Following the completion of his education, he made the move into primetime television with appearances on several shows. He was quick to gain popularity, and also a reputation as a no-nonsense talk show host and judge following his stints as a host on TV3’s ‘Start,’ the political chat program ‘Hot Issues,’ and the reality show, ‘Hottest Host.’
After working in the Ghanaian television industry for a considerable amount of time, JOT migrated to London, to begin a new career as an editor and writer with the Eagle Media House. During his experience at Eagle Media House, he was appointed the position of Director of Publishing, after writing and editing best-sellers such as ‘War on Poetry,’ ‘The Concept of Love in Relationships,’ and ‘Being Like Hannah.’
After the success of his publishing career, JOT decided to return to his acting roots, and relocated to Ghana in 2006 to pursue a career as an actor, playwright, and a media consultant for various Ghanaian media houses.
JOT has won a string of awards including one for ‘Best Actor’ for his role in ‘The Story Ananse Told’ (1987). He was also the writer for the African Movie Academy award-winning film ‘Not My Daughter’- a film about female genital mutilation.
Further screenwriting credits include ‘Days of Thunder’ (2004), ‘I Am Father’s Baby’ (2007) and ‘Sons of Destiny’ (2007). However, his most outstanding screen product came courtesy of 2009’s ‘Asanteman’- a play detailing the history of the Ashanti kingdom. Not only did JOT write the play, but also directed it. It went on to become one of the most elaborate and successful plays in the history of Ghanaian stage culture.
As of recently, JOT starred in ‘I Sing Of A Well’- the insightful film produced by the outstanding director, Leila Djansi. He starred in the lead male role of Prince Wanambe.
Although he has been in the Ghanaian entertainment industry for quite a while now, there seems to be no stopping Mr Agyeman- he is truly a star that keeps on shining brighter and brighter.
