The Rolling Stones became the first Western band to play an open air free concert in the Cuban capital of Havana, with an historic concert held on the date Christians commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Cuba is normalising relations with the West more, their concert following on the historic visit to the island by US Prez Barack Obama- so in a way the concert symbolises the resurrection of the island into the mainstream.
Hundreds of thousands of people crowded the 450,000 capacity Ciudad Deportiva stadium to catch a glimpse of the concert, with people queuing for hours to get inside. Such music had been banned in the country for decades under the dictatorship of Fidel Castro.
“We know that years ago, it was difficult to listen to our music in Cuba, but now here we are in your beautiful land,” Mick Jagger told the crowd in Spanish.
“I think that, finally, the times are changing. That’s true, no?” The crowd roared their agreement.
The British band played many of their greatest hits, hitting an 18 song performance in two hours.
“After today I can die,” Joaquin Ortiz, a 62-year-old night watchman, told the Associated Press. “This is like my last wish, seeing the Rolling Stones.”
