We have criminals in high places running this country and whilst most of them escape unscathed, every once in a while at least one of them gets in trouble.
The Vice-Chairman of the NPP in the Mfantsiman Constituency in the Central Region, David Awotwe, has been arrested for selling government-subsidised outboard motors at market prices and pocketing the difference.
Awotwe apparently obtained these subsidised motors, which normally go for Ghc 20,000 but has been subsidised by government and are supposed to be sold for Ghc 10,000.
What he did was get his hands on these subsidised motors, sell them on the open market for way above the Ghc 10,000 subsidised price and pocket the difference.
He was exposed after an investigative piece by Manasseh Azure Awuni which led to a police report, during which Awuni and his team managed to get Awotwe to sell them one of the motors for Ghc 16,000.
Essentially whilst government had subsidised the product to help the citizens, corrupt party officials were still selling them for high prices and making money at the expense of the citizenry.

This is basically the story of Ghana in a nutshell. One can only hope this doesn’t become a foolish case and that Awotwe actually faces consequences for his actions.
