The minister of the church, known as Reverend Eze Ogba, refused to marry a groom and bride on Sunday, November 26, due to rumors that the woman was pregnant. This caused uncertainty at the Assemblies of God Church, Ehere, Ogbor Hill, Aba, Abia state.
According to Vanguard, the pair, identified as Mr. Isreal Kennedy and his spouse, Miss Rose, along with their family members, had attended the church for the wedding, which was scheduled to take place following church service.
The bride’s pregnancy was discovered through a pregnancy test that the church leadership had ordered, which was when things got serious.
The Church priest declared the wedding to be canceled in response to the developments. Additionally, the couple’s suspension was notified by the church administration.
The priest was observed examining the bride, who insisted on her innocence, while the families made desperate attempts to get the church board to reverse the decision. The incident caused chaos inside the church. The families of the bridegroom and bribe reportedly attended a local church where the marriage ceremony was performed. There was also a reception ceremony held at the new church.
An Assemblies of God Church member, speaking under anonymity, stated that it is customary for the church to not conduct weddings for expectant brides, regardless of their marital status.
“It is the tradition of the Assemblies of God Church not to wed pregnant brides, it is not a new thing. The groom and bride who presented themselves for the wedding knew that the Church could not join them in matrimony because the bride was already pregnant. They were to be joined after the service when the result of the test ordered by the church would have been ready. After conducting the pregnancy test on the bride, the church found out that she was pregnant and announced that the wedding was cancelled.” He stated.
