The 2015 FIFA World Youth Championship has been flying under the radar because Sepp Blatter and his cronies have decided to hog all the attention just around the time that the spectacle for the next top talents to grace world football is about to commence.

Yet, irrespective of what’s going on in Zurich, who’s going to jail or who isn’t, the tournament kicks off on the 30th of May, as planned, in Auckland, New Zealand. Up first would be the host nation against Ukraine.

Snuggling in Group B, awaiting their turn at bat is our very own Black Satellites. Managed by Selas Tetteh, led by Hearts of Oak defender Owusu Bempah, they would be hoping to emulate the title winning team of 2009.

That team, led by the inspiring Andre Ayew and Tetteh, conquered the world in Egypt. The first and to date only African side to do so, it would be an enormous satisfaction for Tetteh to repeat that feat.

And luckily he has the side to do so again, with a team brimming with talent from head to toe. The nimble footed Clifford Aboagye, bronze ball winner in Turkey two years ago. Godfred Donsah, the next big thing to come from Ghana who at 18 is already setting the Italian top flight alive. Aseidu Attobrah, Yaw Yeboah, and captain Bempah: all established players at their clubs and ready to lead the charge.

First up for the Black Satellites is Austria, the game set to take place Saturday. As with every tournament held down under, the 12 hour time differential means waking up to watch games at extremely odd hours. The opening game is at 0100 GMT, with Ghana’s game commencing at 0700 GMT on Saturday.

In the group with Ghana and Austria, are Panama and Argentina. Other African nations represented at the tournament include Mali, Senegal, and champions Nigeria.

The FIFA World Youth Championship runs from May 30-June 20 in 7 cities across New Zealand. To the Black Satellites, carpe diem!
