Many Ghanaians have expressed their disappointment on why Shatta Wale’s ‘My Level’ should win highlife song of the year award, when there are pure highlife songs from Kuami Eugene, Daddy Lumba and the rest.
Also, British born musicologist, Professor John Collins has expressed surprise on why ‘My Level’ should be categorize as a highlife music.
Once upon a time highlife music was king in Ghana, in fact for a long time it was the only game in town and Ghana produced some of the best highlife singers ever.
As time went on more and more genres were either invented or imported, with hiplife and reggae/dancehall being the two most prominent ones.
