Mimi Andani-Michaels, director of the Golden Movie Awards, has made it clear that the choice of winning movies would always remain in the hands of an experienced jury and not turned into the hands of the public.
According to Mimi, award shows decided by public voting become popularity contests and sometimes the best movies or actors might not win because they don’t have any followers.
Just about a decade ago Ghanaians were introduced to the sweet and bubbly singer Mimi Andani-Michaels, who was professionally known simply as Mimi.
Mimi first burst onto the scene as a reality tv star, appearing on the 2008 edition of Big Brother Africa, representing Ghana.
But she became a real household name later that year when she released her first single titled ‘Leave Me Alone’, which undoubtedly was one of the biggest hits of the year and cemented Mimi as a bona fide star.

The organizers of the Golden Movie Awards Africa (GMAA) are pleased to announce that auditors for the award’s virtual point have come out with a list of films that have qualified for the final stage of the process. The nomination announcement will be held in Cote d’Ivoire on the 20th of May 2018 where the various categories of the qualified films will be announced and the main event is in Ghana on 2nd June 2018.
Organizers of the Golden Movie Awards Africa will like to thank the numerous filmmakers across Africa who have submitted works for this year’s awards. Submissions closed on the 2nd of April and the Selection process is currently underway. The JURY will begin sitting from the 17th of April to the 23rd of April 2018 at a housed location. The organizers are incorporating jurors from Nigeria, Burkina Faso and a film critic from England.
The deadlines for submission of entries into the 2018 Golden Movie Awards Africa is rapidly approaching, organizers have notified filmakers and the general public. The prestigious award scheme opened entries a while back and with the deadline looming, are reminding stakeholders to ensure it does not pass them by.
After receiving an encouraging number of movies across Africa, the grand jury of the award that seeks to honour individuals in the African movie industry who have impacted and excelled greatly in the movie world under the year of review across Africa and has also embarked on humanitarian works throughout their countries “Golden Movie Awards” have had their first meeting.
The sitting which took place at OAK PLAZA which is also one of the sponsors for the award was a long one, as the sitting started at 8am and ended at 9pm.
The Grand Jury has promised that, only people who merit the award will be awarded simply because ,the award scheme is based on performance only and not popularity.
However in a discussion with the communication Director Esther Quayson, she stated that Golden Movie Awards has only two categories for judgment by public which is GOLDEN FAVOURITE ACTOR and GOLDEN FAVOURITE ACTRESS.

Golden movie awards Africa’s film submissions have ended with an impressive submission of movies from all over Africa. The Jury is all set for pre-selection to enable the Grand jury determine who gets nominated and who wins what.
A category will be made up of five (5) nominees from which the winner is selected through the power of THE GRAND JURY only, however the public will be given 100% power in the following category;

The jury is made up of film makers, film experts, film critics, film lovers, and media personnel’s with original and diverse points of view. They select films from both the documentary and dramatic categories to receive a range of awards, although it is possible to conduct the selection process by teleconference, the preferred approach would be a face-to-face meeting of the Committee to allow for optimum back-and-forth discussion and deliberation during the selection process.
The Grand Jury plays a critical role in ensuring the success and reputation of Golden Movie Awards, its role will be to evaluate nominations ,vote on the winner from the pool of nominations, ensuring that the process is fair and unbiased. The Committee will be independent, but supported by the organization administering the prize. The Selection Committee’s operations are beyond reproach for the Golden Movie Awards to become the highly prestigious Awards for Africa.
Golden Movie Awards – Africa – a new-fangled awards scheme which seeks to honor individuals in the African movie industry who have impacted and excelled in their acting careers– was officially launched in Accra on Wednesday, February 11, 2015.
The awards system which comprises of 21 faculty members and a grand jury is open to all film-makers across Africa
Speaking at the launch, Country Director of Golden Movie Awards – Africa, Wilhelmina Abu-Andani, stressed that it was the intent of the organizers to set up a credible awards scheme which would match the continental standard of excellence, hence the formation of the Golden Movie Awards – Africa. According to her, “this award has come to stay for good.”
