Big Demonstration to Hit Washington Next Week: Ghanaians in USA to Protest Economic Hardship

Talking about the hardship in Ghana is almost a cliché by this point it feels like beating a dead horse. Yet a group of Ghanaians living in the USA, Ghanaians Against Bad Governance, have announced a protest for next Wednesday July 23.

The group, who describe themselves as a ‘non-partisan’, say they are interested in the economic and social well being of the people of Ghana.

Ghanaians yesterday had to re-adjust to an increase in petroleum prices, and consequently transport fares, as the economic deterioration showed no signs of abating.

The protest is slated for the Ghanaian embassy in Washington and is set to kick off at 0900 local time and would conclude with the presentation of a petition intended to be forwarded to the Government of Ghana.

This protest follows on the heels of similar ones going on in Ghana currently, such as the Occupy Flag Staff House and Red Friday protests.

Ghanaians Against Bad Governance counts amongst their ranks Ghanaians of diverse background living in the United States, who believe that the Government has to deliver on the promises they made to the people of Ghana.

#BringBackOurGirls: 63 Women and Girls Escape Boko Haram

BringBackOurGirls
BringBackOurGirls

Some good news from afar, amidst all these gloom about Castro’s demise in Ghana.

63 out of 68 women and girls captured last month by Boko Haram are reported to have escaped from the clutches of the Islamist Militant group.

Boko Haram caused a stir in April when they captured over 200 girls who have still not been found to this day. The group also captured 68 more last month near Damboa, a town in Borno State; and it is from this second group of captives that the women and girls are said to have escaped. Five women however, have still not been found.

The captives took the initiative to escape when the Boko Haram members went out to carry out a tactical operation.

They however found themselves in trouble, as the Nigerian Military forces taking them on routed them and the group was forced to mobilise all its members and flee the battle.

The captives then realised that they were alone, took the initiative and escaped the camp.

This is good news to warm the heart, made even better by the announcement of Nigerian forces they killed over fifty rebels in the clash that led to the escape of the girls.

These Boko Haram animals have been terrorising their country for too long, and this recent trend of focusing on capturing women and children, particularly girls is a worrying one.

Couple Charged with Murder of their Son in Achimota | Boy Was Allegedly Killed For Attempt to Have Sex With His Mother!!

shocked
Shocked

Children are usually the most cherished part of any family. Parents often would do anything for their children. Especially between a mum and her children there exists a certain mystical connection, not in all cases but certainly in most. This is because people realise that they are their legacy, what would be left of them in this world when the time comes for them to go to the afterlife.

It seems that is not the case for a couple in Achimota, though, as police have arrested a man and his wife for the murder of their eight year old son.

Comfort Abunero and her husband were picked up by police yesterday after the boy’s grandmother filed a report over the suspicious circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.

The boy was living in the North with his grandmother until his mum made a request for him to come down to Accra to live with her and her husband.

Yet the next thing the grandmother knew, she had been informed of the death of her grandson, who had already been buried by his parents.

Police believe the boy was killed over an attempt to have sex with his mother, possibly after being beaten mercilessly; and that the couple buried him near their Dome residence to avoid arousing suspicion.

Though we seem to have forgotten about them on social media, the over 200 girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in Nigeria are still missing—and officials say they are still on a search for these girls.

Former UK Prime Minister- Gordon Brown has called for British forces to be deployed to Nigeria to aid the rescue of the schoolgirls being held captive by Islamic militants.

Speaking to MPs last night, Gordon Brown said the failure to rescue the girls, who were kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram two months ago, demanded an ‘international and domestic response’.

‘We have to do more to help the Nigerian government secure the rescue of the girls,’ he said.

DID YOU KNOW THAT: Sudan’s Gadalla Gubara Was the First African on the Continent to Have Made a Film?

African Movies

I was going through some press releases sent to me from the Cannes Press Office this morning—and I came across an interesting article which was written by Jean-Pierre Garcia, the Editor of Le Film Africain & du Sud magazine—talking about how film making began in Africa.

In the article, Jean-Pierre Garcia mentions that “though Sudan’s Gadalla Gubara had been the first African on the continent to make a film with his documentary Song of Karthoum” in 1950, it was the film-Borom Sarret made in 1963 by Senegalese director-Sembène Ousmane that marked the beginning of Africa cinema.

It is an educative piece which throws light on the film-making journey in Africa. If you’ve not read this article already, read it below…

line-short

The film that really marked the beginning of African cinema was Borom Sarret (1963) by Senegalese director Sembène Ousmane. Although Sudan’s Gadalla Gubara had been the first African on the continent to make a film with his documentary Song of Karthoum (1950), Sembène Ousmane remains the father figure by common consent. In tackling the story of a cart-driver subjected to the rules and regulations of the new regime, Borom Sarret sides with the poor of Dakar. This short film, which stirred consciousness and spoke out symbolically, led the way for future generations of filmmakers firmly focused on their own continent.

Filmmakers: (re)awakening consciousness

For the “father” of African cinema, the newly gained political independence only made sense if it was accompanied by a restoration of dignity, which had hitherto been suppressed by the weight of the administration and its reductive mechanisms (language, religion, education and the police).

From the outset, cinema became the instrument of choice in this process of re-conquest: images were used to rebuild self-image, as well as the image of every population on the continent. In his cinema seminar at Cannes in 2005, Sembène Ousmane recalled: “I was gripped by a need to ‘discover’ Africa. Not just Senegal, but just about the entire continent…

I became aware that I had to learn to make films if I really wanted to reach my people. A film can be seen and understood even by illiterate people – a book cannot speak to entire populations!” Sembène Ousmane laid the aesthetic foundations of his filmmaking (very close to Italian neo-realism) and set them in a pan-Africanist context.

The initial equation was simple: independent Africa “needed” filmmakers who could (re-)awaken consciousness to counter colonial cinema, which had set out merely to entertain its audience, alienating them in the process.

Around fifteen films made their mark over the course of this first decade (1964-1974). All dealt with either the colonial past and the liberation movements, or cultural assimilation and the problems of the newly independent states (corruption, bureaucracy, the shifting of wealth, etc.)

VIDEO: Nigeria Kidnapped Girls ‘Shown’ in New Boko Haram Video | At Least We Now Know They Are Alive

Nigerian Kiddnaped girls

With the on going attempt to rescue the around 276 girls who were kidnapped by the Islamic Militant group-Boko Haram, my worry was that what if this evil group harms the girls?

A new video released by Boko Haram which attempts to start a negotiation shows about 100 girls with one of the girls saying in the video that, the group has not harmed them.

The group’s leader-Abubakar Shekau also says in the video that the girls would be held until all their imprisoned members have been freed.

Though this is the news we so much want to hear, it feels great to know the girls are alive and unharmed…

line-short

According to BBC;

A new video released by Islamist militants Boko Haram claims to show around 100 girls kidnapped from a school in Nigeria last month.

The group’s leader, Abubakar Shekau, said they would be held until all imprisoned militants had been freed.

He said the girls had converted to Islam. The video, released on Monday, claims to show them praying.

Boko Haram abducted more than 200 girls in northern Nigeria on 14 April and threatened to sell them.

All You Need to Know About Boko Haram Leader Abubakar Shekau: A Ruthless Leader with a Twisted Ideology

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6InIPnqaz4U

The Islamic militant group-Boko Haram which means ‘western education is sinful’ has engaged in several atrocious enterprises but their recent kidnapping of 276 girls from a girl’s school has brought amplifying world attention to their diabolical activities.

With the US and other states joining hands with Nigeria, we hope to see the leader captured and a crackdown of his ring of commanders.

CNN has published a feature on the leader of Boko Haram- Abubakar Shekau, rightly calling him ruthless leader with a twisted ideology.

line

According to CNN;

He is the face of terror. A ruthless leader with a twisted ideology. And the sadistic architect of a campaign of mayhem and misery.

And yet, very little is known about Abubakar Shekau, the leader of Boko Haram.

He operates in the shadows, leaving his underlings to orchestrate his repulsive mandates. He resurfaces every once in a while in videotaped messages to mock the impotence of the Nigerian military. And he uses his faith to recruit the impressionable and the disenfranchised to his cause.

He’s a religious scholar

Shekau was born in Shekau village that borders Niger. He studied under a cleric and then attended Borno State College of Legal and Islamic Studies for higher studies on Islam.

That’s why he’s also known as ‘Darul Tawheed,’ which translates to an expert in monotheism, or the oneness of Allah.

French Mother Denied Entry into the United States For Family Holiday Because ‘the Name on Her Passport Sounds Like Al Qaeda’

French passport

It looks like we have to be careful with the names we give to our children or re-access our own given names—if we are going by what recently happened to a French Mother who wanted to travel to the United States…

A French mother scheduled to fly to New York via Switzerland for a holiday with her husband and two children but she was denied entry to the United States, seemingly because her name sounds suspiciously like Al Qaeda.

Aida Alic travelled to at Geneva airport on Wednesday to connect to JFK but shockingly, she was told by Swiss Airlines officials that her access to the country had been denied.

It looks like she was placed on the US no-fly list and she had no option than to cancel their trip and return to their house near Chambery in the French Alps.

It wasn’t until the 33-year-old got home and started googling for answers that she realized her name appears surname first on her passport and reads ‘Alic Aida’.

SOMEWHERE IN THE WORLD: 16-year-old Stow Away in Wheel Well of a Flight & Survives | Lucky Bastard!

Airplane

As the years go by, people keep coming up with different illegal and also dangerous ways to transport themselves from one place to another.

In 2003, Charles McKinley, 25,  who wanted to go to his father’s house in Dallas (Texas) from New York decided to “ship himself rather than pay for a ticket,” and lucky for him, he got delivered safely.

A young man has somehow cheated death or let’s say got pretty lucky after lying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane’s wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen.

According to Yahoo;

Officials say a 16-year-old boy is “lucky to be alive” and unharmed after flying from California to Hawaii stowed away in a plane’s wheel well, surviving cold temperatures at 38,000 feet and a lack of oxygen.

“Doesn’t even remember the flight,” FBI spokesman Tom Simon in Honolulu told The Associated Press on Sunday night. “It’s amazing he survived that.”

The boy was questioned by the FBI after being discovered on the tarmac at the Maui airport Sunday morning with no identification, Simon said.
